ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Journal staffers were honored with six first-place awards and 10 second- and third-place finishes in two regional journalism contests.

In the 2018 Best of the West contest, which draws hundreds of entries each year from newspapers, magazines and websites in 14 Western states, including California and Texas, Journal staff took two first-place awards: photographer Roberto E. Rosales won for his work on the series “Two Nations, One Aquifer,” which examined how residents on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border use underground water supplies.

In the 2018 Top of the Rockies contest – sponsored by the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for reporters and news groups in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming – the Journal won four first-place awards. They were:

Receiving second-place awards were:

Photographer Rosales for Feature Photography for an image of the South Valley’s Marigold Parade/Day of the Dead.
