The Green Ray

(1986 / dir. by Éric Rohmer / 105 minutes)

Sunday, April 29, 7:00 pm / CERIA 365

Enter through the front door of CERIA, near the elevator.

As the school year comes to a hurried close, daydream about summer beaches with the best film made by my favorite director. Marie Rivière gives her finest performance (she improvised the script with Rohmer) as a woman of independence, indecision, and an insistence on self-worth and self-fulfillment. A movie of great empathy and great beauty, The Green Ray is alive with the breezes of windswept coastlines and Paris sunlight. Per critic Nick Pinkerton, Rohmer’s “focus and faith on the undressed essence of the world, as in the films of Renoir and Bresson, can bring us back to things themselves.”

The sixteenth in a series of historically significant (and always entertaining) film classics, screened every other weekend throughout the semester.

Free and open to all UNM students.
