Porco Rosso

(1992 / dir. by Hayao Miyazaki / 94 minutes)

Sunday, February 18, 7:00 pm / CERIA 365

Enter through the front door of CERIA, near the elevator.

“I’d rather be a pig than a fascist,” says the eponymous hero of Porco Rosso, Hayao Miyazaki’s tribute to the Adriatic coast, the adventure films of Errol Flynn, and the beauty of Italian design. A gentle, funny, occasionally silly movie, Porco Rosso nonetheless has much in common with Miyazaki’s 2013 masterpiece The Wind Rises; both are films about matters of the heart by way of the director’s reverence for airplanes and flight, and each tells a love story underscored by how little time we really get with each other. Late valentines are great valentines and Porco Rosso is an arrow straight from Cupid’s bow.

In Japanese with English subtitles.

The eleventh in a series of historically significant (and always entertaining) film classics, screened every other weekend throughout the semester.

Free and open to all UNM students.
