Since his 1996 debut The Day a Pig Fell into the Well, Hong Sang-soo has made 25 films, most of them variations on romantic relationships between men and women who rarely know what it is they want, either from their own lives or from one another. Characters meet over soju in bars, inevitably drink to excess, and wander city streets or small town sidewalks long after midnight. Right Now, Wrong Then is an excellent starting point in Hong’s filmography, quiet and approachable but full of the South Korean director’s ongoing interests: time and evolving perspectives, making a living making movies, and the everyday effort to do our best with, per critic Nick Pinkerton, the “modest materials” we have at hand.

In Korean with English subtitles.

The twelfth in a series of historically significant (and always entertaining) film classics, screened every other weekend throughout the semester.

Free and open to all UNM students.
