Shot almost entirely on location in New York, Acapulco, and San Francisco (including scenes on Errol Flynn’s yacht Zaca), The Lady from Shanghai is Orson Welles’s dreamlike, disorienting tribute to character actors (among them Everett Sloane in a career-best performance) and doomed romance. Infamously re-edited by Columbia Studios from its original 155-minute rough cut (the lost footage was later destroyed), the hour and a half that remains would be a high-water mark in the career of almost any other director and is as essential as Citizen Kane.
